Ashley L. | Purina Veterinary Consultant, Sales
In the sales career world – regardless of industry – many of the job descriptions can start to sound the same. Each company has its own approach to getting their sales people to be the best sales force. How many times have you heard “we have the best people”? Or, how many times have you heard that, but are then told every detail of how you will do your job, and then your individuality goes away? Maybe this is the stigma you’ve heard if you haven’t spent enough years working in sales just yet. Many companies tell their sales force; “you are the CEO of your territory”. At Purina, that’s actually true. You’re given the autonomy to go where you need to go and do what you need to do in order to grow your sales territory in the best way you see fit. Of course, there are set goals in place we must achieve to be successful so we can continue to grow our business and brand loyalty with customers. That being said, how you achieve these set goals is up to you – your budget, your territory, your ideas, your prioritization, and your flexibility. You can be as creative as you desire. Teams are in place to help each other achieve the goals. We do operate in our own territories, but there is a deep sense of teamwork and camaraderie embedded into what we do. My fellow sales reps act as a soundboard to elevate ideas and brainstorm execution. The mentorship in this role is also a great way to grow and develop quickly. After all, we strive together toward the common goal of growing our portfolio of brands and enriching the lives of dogs and cats with quality nutrition.
For me, I came from working in sales for a vastly different industry where work-life balance was not a luxury afforded to me as an employee. Purina cares about my family, my life, and my pets. They ensure that work-life balance remains just that – balanced. As a Purina Veterinary Consultant (a Territory Manager of sorts), I sell our Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets line of products to veterinary clinics in the Kansas City territory. This allows me to be the face of Purina to vet clinics as they make key decisions on the products they endorse for their clients’ pets. I work from home one day per week to ensure ample time for planning and administrative work. That leaves four days out of the week to be in the field spreading the word about this dynamic portfolio of products that’s making cutting-edge breakthroughs in pet care nutrition. It feels good to represent a brand that I can confidently stand behind in their research, quality, and honesty. But, before even getting to that point, we’re given extensive training so we’re ready to go confidentially into the field. We build relationships with people who care about people and their pets, and have the privilege of talking about the best, most researched products on the market. Seeing puppies and kittens all day is a nice perk, too!
All that said, if you have some sales experience, are intrinsically motivated, love helping people and pets, and appreciate work-life balance, then Purina Sales is the place to be. You will work like a dog, but that also means you get to play like one!
