Our dry pet food factory in Zanesville is favorably located along the banks of the Muskingum River in scenic east-central Ohio halfway between Columbus and Wheeling, West Virginia. Originally under the ownership of BENCO Pet Foods, this 100-year-old facility was acquired by Purina in 1987 and has since evolved as we've innovated and renovated our portfolio of products, processes and technical equipment. Home to our Moist & Meaty and Alpo® brands, Zanesville is also the location for various other major manufacturers, including Kellogg's, Avon, Auto Zone and the Dollar General Distribution Center.
Zanesville was named after Ebenezer Zane, a pioneer from Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), who constructed Zane's Trace. However, it was nicknamed the "City of Natural Advantages". From 1810-1812, the city was the second state capital of Ohio. Its two engineering landmarks, the Muskingum River Canal and the Zanesville Y-Bridge, are the only such structures still in use today within the U.S.
At Purina, we're proud to call Zanesville home. We produce 21,800 tons (100,000 unit loads or 3,040 trucks loads) annually of Alpo® and Moist & Meaty products – all of which are produced, packaged and shipped with the utmost quality and care. This is the only location that produces all of the Moist & Meaty and Alpo® Meal Helpers for all of the U.S. and Canada. In most cases, we do not ship to retail stores. Instead, our products are shipped to Purina's sister factories around the country. Aside from everyday factory operations, we have close ties to our local partners at Big Brothers Big Sisters and the United Way, supporting the people in our community we care so much about.
